First Impressions Review: The Follow Ups – “Not Alone”

Mom’s Basement Records, 05 Jul 2023

Canadian pop punk blasts The Follow Ups have a new song available.  It’s called “Not Alone” and it has an accompanying video.  The song is available via Mom’s Basement Records and is the lead single from their forthcoming full-length Know Who Your Friends Aren’t (due later this year with no other info available currently).  If you’re new to the band, expect some snotty Ramonescore with hooks all over the place – take a listen to some of their stuff (including the fantastic 2019 full-length …don’t like you either) over at Bandcamp.

The song goes all in from the jump, with fantastic lead guitar paired with blitzing rhythm guitars, sprinting and straightforward drums, and a melodic bassline that is placed pretty perfectly in the mix.  After a few, the snot-shouted lead vocals come in and drop a series of memorable lines i.e. (“you can’t wait your whole life for someone to tell you you’re not alone”) in a melodic singalong manner that sticks well after the song ends.  Well produced throughout with all players getting their proper space, “Not Alone” is all high-energy sugar pop punk goodness, a cool tell of great things to come from the upcoming full-length.  Oh, and the video is fun, too – a sort of city tour-meets-live experience video.  By all means, check this out.

  • Song Comes From: Know Who Your Friends Aren’t
  • Album Release Date: later this year
  • Purchase/Pre-Order/Pre-Save: album pre-order not yet available; song stream: Apple Music / Spotify

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
