First Impressions Review: The Jumpscares – “Where Will You Be (This Halloween)”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

The Jumpscares.  Now that’s a pretty cool moniker.  This new song apparently features members of Space Age Zeros, The Follow Ups, and others!  And it was produced by Patrick McVay (of The Putz and other awesome bands)!  That’s a pedigree I can get behind.

The band’s first single, “Where Will You Be (This Halloween)”, is an interesting number.  Considering the band membership, I came in expecting some catching-fast punk rock loaded with cool guitar hooks and a battering-quick pace – and the song delivers.  The guitars sound great, as do the clattering cymbals, and the drums are in a constant state of drive, save for a couple of slowed pedal-off-the-gas moments on the chorus and a stop-and-go arrangement.  What sets this one apart from the associated bands are the lead vocals.  Provided by “Rath”, the vocals have no semblance of snottiness or angst, instead going for an ominous and haunting croon that plays well with the horror music lyrics (think the type of vocals on Misfits releases – though this is not an imitation).  Anyway, the song itself is catchy – I’ve been done with my one listen for several minutes as I type this and the melody is still kicking around in my skull.  Check this one out.
