First Impressions Review: The Queers – “You Shook Me All Night Long”

Cleopatra Records, 21 Jun 2023

The Queers have a new song out as a standalone single.  It’s a cover of the AC/DC song “You Shook Me All Night Long” and is the first new music from the band since 2021’s covers album Reverberation.  Despite a strong affinity for seeming kindred spirits Screeching Weasel in the early 90’s, I came along late to The Queers, never giving them much of a chance until the later 90’s.  Having fallen for a string of early records of theirs, I kinda cut out and didn’t listen closely to very much after Punk Rock Confidential, at least until 2020’s terrific Save The World dropped and brought me back in.  So now, ya know, I’m interested again.

That all said, “You Shook Me All Night Long” was never my favorite AC/DC song in the first place, and The Queers take doesn’t do a lot to change that for me.  It plays the song pretty straight – the guitars and bass hit the important chords and notes to be recognizable and the drums plod along at a mid-tempo pace while Joe sings and sneers like Joe sings and sneers.  The lead guitar during the bridge sounds good, but overall the song comes across like a go-through-the-motions cover that doesn’t do anything particularly different or great from the original.  It’s a basic mid-tempo punk cover of a just-okay AC/DC original.  It’s okay fun for a one-time listen, but not something I’m likely to come back to.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
