First Impressions Review: The Suck – “The America 2021 EP”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

It feels like yesterday that I was reviewing the recent split between and Johnny Terrien and the Bad Lieutenants (actually, it was just last week – I was a little late to the early October release).  Anyway, The Suck have another new release, , that just released Friday.  My expectations are high.

Opener “America 2021” is a deliberate mid-tempo song with an infectious guitar riff on the chorus and a repetitive lead guitar on the verse that sticks in my head.  “Playing Swords” is just marginally faster, but it feels more driving and is powerful with some vocal hooks that leave an impression – and like many songs by The Suck, beer is a major character.  Closer “The Pond Diver” is another inebriated story set to a mid-tempo stomp and memorable vocal hooks.  Again, it’s a propulsive, pounding number.  With The Suck, you know what you’re gonna get and fans of the street rock punk from albums like 2021’s Boris Sprinkler will wanna dig in.  Good stuff.
