Germany’s Thin Lassie have been taking on quite a bit of buzz recently with last week’s 4-song release Invaders From Venus. I’ve seen mention of it several times and I tend to be a fan of goofy space punk (which seems to be a general description), plus the album cover is fantastically campy.
Opener “Scruffy Looking Nerf Herder” (obvious Star Wars reference for that one person who’s uninitiated) is a banging mid-tempo story with buzzing guitars, rattling bass, and a really cool brief, stuttered, and descending bridge around the 1:15 mark. “Invaders From Venus” has ridiculously shredding lead guitar and the song falls right into place, this one with some really nicely placed backing vocals throughout. “The Lizard Men” is a little more rambunctious, playing at a really quick speed and with the vocals sounding a little more unhinged. And then closer “My Ex From Mars” has some really cool backing “ooh la la’s” and a pretty memorable melody. All these songs are well written and performed and there’s even a bit of a bubblegum touch to some of this stuff. My only knock is that the vocals are not always my favorite – one of those things that might grow on me with some more listens, but throwing me a bit off the first time through. Still, fans of campy space-infused pop punk will wanna check this out.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
