San Francisco’s Ultra Sect are a new-to-me oi/street punk band (though they’ve got a significant number of releases under their belt – check ‘em out at the Bandcamp link below). This new release, Martyris Victoria, arrived recently and is their first since May 2022.
Martyris Victoria is a 2-song release. Lead song “Mad Dog” goes at a mid-tempo stomp and is colored with lead guitar, mostly spartan, effective, and slightly affected. The fairly clean rhythm guitars and bass do what they need to and the vocals growl with an appropriate sneer and anger over the racket. The “m-a-d-d-o-g” spell-out works well and the song itself is a solid memory. The second song, “The Strong Survive”, opens with flange-treated guitars that sound influenced by The Templars and when the whole band comes in, they settle into another mid-tempo stomp that works, especially when the gang vocals join ranks. I do think the songs could maybe be trimmed a touch (both clock in at over 3 ½ minutes, and, you know, my attention span sucks), but all-in-all, I like what I’m hearing on this and will be giving it some more listens.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
