First Impressions Review: Why Bother? – “Prowlers in the Night”

Feel It Records, 26 Mar 2023

Getting closer and closer to the release of Why Bother?’s new album A City of Unsolved Miseries and along comes another new single.  This one, the ominously titled “Prowlers in the Night”, follows up the previous “Self Indulgent Ways”.  “Prowlers” is actually a cover of an old The Bags song and is only available on the digital release of the album (and thus, not on the vinyl release).

“Prowlers” seems to keep the original structure intact.  The creepy guitar line repeats over buzzing and plodding destructo-noise.  Rhythm guitars chug and noise adds texture to the proceedings, almost sounding like it was recorded in a wind tunnel.  The vocals are twisted but true to the original and the haunting UFO-synths that pulse in are a fantastic touch.  I really loved the first single and this follow-up is aces, too.  A City of Unsolved Miseries can’t get here soon enough.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
