First Impressions Review: Why Bother? – “Self Indulgent Ways”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

Feel It Records, 16 Mar 2023

Just recently we reported on Mason City, Iowa’s Why Bother? announcing a new album (called A City of Unsolved Miseries) and delivering a new single (called “Self Indulgent Ways”).  I’m relatively new to the band, but have been checking out their weirdo outsider-punk music over the past couple months and the announcement was welcome news.

The new song, “Self Indulgent Ways”, opens with some dirty bugged out guitars and steadfast drums that sound blown-out while vocals drone on semi-melodically.  It’s rambunctious and oddly dangerous, swaddling all sorts of gross barbaric distortion and noise into what ends up being a memorable dumpster fire of a song.  This one is maybe a little less synth-driven than some of their other stuff (though a few alien noises drop in like a falling bomb), but the absolutely destroyed punk rock is fantastic.  And the lead vocals on this one are maybe my favorite from a Why Bother? song yet.  I’m an Iowa guy and am excited to find another band from the state making stuff I’m into (I’m looking at you TV Cop and Trevor Blendour, among others).
