First Impressions Review: Worn Out Trend – “Vacation”

Self-released, 11 Jul 2023

Oakland Park, Florida pop punks Worn Out Trend have released their debut single.  The song is called “Vacation” and it’s available for purchase over at the Bandcamp link below.  Accompanying the single is a lyric video for the song.

“Vacation” opens with escalating guitars and lead vocals before the drums and bass come banging in along with some great lead guitar that is revisited throughout the song.  The lead and backing vocals go on about needing a break from fake people and are pulled off well with some solid melodies, especially on the chorus (they pair well with the chord progressions) and the mid-tempo stomp mostly keeps its momentum.  Around the 2 minute mark and again near the end, the band drops in a sorta-breakdown part that doesn’t land quite as well for me.  It feels very much like it’s from an early 2000’s POP punk song (think New Found Glory, Fall Out Boy) as the band drops in a couple of “I need a fucking vacation, whoa-oh-oh” lines that just aren’t my thing.  That said, the song is mostly well-structured, well-played, and clearly produced.  Fans of the early 2000s pop punk sound will likely like this.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
