First Impressions Review: Young Eyes – “Mirrors Won’t Rust”

Rad Girlfriend Records, 10 Jul 2023

Rad Girlfriend band Young Eyes have delivered a new single.  The song is called “Mirrors Won’t Rust” and it comes from the upcoming album All These Steps Lead Us The Wrong Way.  That album arrives 22 Sep 2023 with pre-orders available at the Bandcamp link below.  Along with the single comes a video for the song that premiered recently over at New Noise.

“Mirrors Won’t Rust” opens with pulsing aggression, rhythmic and noisy with shouted vocals intensely and maniacally ranting over top.  Guitar squalls buzz and burst while the bass throbs ahead of the steadfast rumble of rolling caveman drums with nary a melody to be found.  Towards the end the guitars play a memorable riff, but mostly this one hangs its hat on noisy catharsis and rhythmic hooks.  It sort of reminds me of something by Shellac or maybe McLusky.  Fans of more typical Rad Girlfriend bands will maybe be slightly surprised by this, but those who are willing to go outside the box are gonna find Young Eyes intriguing.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
