First Impressions Reviews – 14 Sep 2022

First Impressions is a collection of whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

Horror Section – “Until The End Of Time”

Memorable But Not Honorable Tapes, 31 Aug 2022

This new song from some of my favorite horror-movie punks comes out just right.  Horror Section always hits pretty good, and the progress release-to-release is admirable.  This song has got spooky vibes worked in through the lead guitar, the ominous melodies, and the backing vocals.  Even better, the stuttered phrasing hooks on the chorus (the “until – the end – of time” part) are way too good at sticking in my head.  This one’s aces.

Eve 6 – “i mean you”

Velocity Records, 31 Aug 2022

I’ve got a soft spot for Eve 6.  I was okay with their first album, but that’s all I heard.  More recently, I learned they’re still making stuff, and they’re pretty funny on Twitter.  So, what the heck?  Let’s hear “i mean you” from the upcoming hyper relevisation.  The song has more digital sounds than I was expecting (is this a change or due to me not hearing them in 20+ years?).  It’s also got a more brooding post-punk sound than I expected.  It’s not my usual thing, but for what they’re going for, it’s at least kinda interesting.

OFF! – “Kill To Be Heard”

Fat Possum Records, 31 Aug 2022

The first few songs released from the upcoming FREE LSD have been all over the place – noise, free jazz, hardcore.  All have been pointing to a weird album.  “Kill To Be Heard” is explosive.  The guitars sound absolutely serrated and the drums are ravaging.  And the cymbals feel like they might jump out and cut you.  Overtop, Keith Morris’ wild-eyed vocals rant like should be expected.  Just make sure they don’t go unappreciated.  It’s a pretty good song that’ll maybe help calm the nerves of those scared of some of the experimental stuff already offered.

FIDLAR – “FSU”

Self-released, 26 Aug 2022

I like FIDLAR.  The whole rambunctious garage punk thing worked well for them on their 2013 self-titled full length.  Problem is, I haven’t listened to anything from them since.  No particular reason, just slipped my mind I guess.  So when I saw “FSU”, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but it certainly wasn’t this.  “FSU” (“Fuck Shit Up” – listen, it’s obvious) is hard.  I mean, aggressive hard.  It’s a dinosaur stomper, with a distorto-guitar groove and agitated anti-social ranting that kinda makes me think of Jesus Lizard on some level.  It’s weird enough that you should probably hear it.

No Age – “Compact Flashes”

Drag City Records, 29 Aug 2022

As discussed before, I’ve been with No Age for a while, loving early songs like “Everybody’s Down” and early albums like Nouns.  The duo has always been weird, using loops and samples to fill out their sound.  Along the way, they’ve gotten more experimental, and with the moves, seemingly a little less explosive.  “Compact Flashes” is a bare bones simple number with some throbbing and pulsing digital percussion interrupted with skittering and disorienting drums, momentary shards of found-sound noises, and dry vocals.  It’s like a cerebral Suicide fronted by Mark E. Smith.  Not what I’m used to, but that’s okay.
