Guitar used by Kurt Cobain shatters record at auction, selling for over $6m

File under: People who have too much money:

This past weekend auction house Julien’s Auctions held “Music Icons,” a two-day music memorabilia-centric auction event. Among the items for bid was the modified Martin 1959 Martin D-18EĀ acoustic guitar, one of only 302 that were made, that Kurt Cobain used during Nirvana‘s classic Mtv Unplugged performance. The guitar eventually sold for over $6m, blowing past the previous auction record for a guitar of just under $4m.

Also available was A Boss DS-1 distortion pedal used by Kurt Cobain, which went for $9,000. The pedal is said to have been used during the pre-Nevermind era and was acquired at a Nirvana gig the night before their earth shattering record was released. Apparently, Mr. Cobain was having issues with said pedal and stomped and kicked it around before throwing the broken pedal into the crowd.

Check out the guitar in action below.
