As we near Seattle’s pop-punks The Subjunctives upcoming album Lets Try This Again (pre-order), we’re hearing more from the band. In addition to the excellent Roll of the Dice interview The Subjunctives subjected themselves to back in July, we now have a new video for the single “It’s a Shame We Didn’t Get More Time Lance.” There’s a whole lot of meaning to this song, so we’ll let Ean explain:
This song is pretty personal. I was a huge J-Church fan, and a bigger Cringer fan before that. I think I have the world’s only Cringer tattoo. Lance Hahn, the songwriter, singer, and guitarist for J-Church had a big impact on my musical development.
Initially, I was profoundly inspired by Cringer’s Karin 7″, which gave me a window into a world of low budget tours, arty record labels, weird intellectuals, frenetic joyful music, accepted misfits, cheap living, and 2nd hand combat boots; a million miles away from the leg humping meat-headed stupidity of the Seattle grunge world. I remember very distinctly that I wanted in. Before long, I would meet Lance and Gardner, sharing bills on tour with Sicko and their new band J-Church. Every vignette in this story really happened, getting his SG fixed on tour, being at Epicenter and telling Josh I liked Cringer better than J-Church and not realizing that Lance was RIGHT THERE beside me, to the moment over seas where I found out that my old friend and musical hero had passed at a young age. The photos in the video were all donated by past members of J-Church, some even from Lance’s long time partner. I think it’s a very sweet video with a melancholic tone set to hooky poppy music. A little bit like J-Church, which was entirely the idea.
I hope you enjoy it!
