It’s like watching Memento in Melt Citizen’s new video “Even When I Can’t Think of You”

OK, get this: just before the end of 2022 El Paso, Texas lofi garage rock act Melt Citizen dropped a video for “I Don’t Even Wanna Be Around Anymore” which consisted solely of a slow motion shot of Melt Citizen kneeling in front of a burning acoustic guitar. How did they get there? Why is that guitar on fire? We just didn’t know.

Well, now there’s a bit more clarity in the new video for “Even When I Can’t Think of You”, which follows the same format as the previous as we go back in time a few seconds to see Melt Citizen holding the burning guitar. With these two videos telling the story in reverse order, Memento-style, I feel the need to ask: Will we ever get to the bottom of this mystery? (I’m guessing the cat sitting on the fence in the background is the equivalent to Joe Pantoliano’s “Teddy” character).

Both tracks are from the recent LP Joylessness, released last October via Die Radical. The album follows up several EPs and singles going back to the 2020 Life’s a Joke, and then You Croak LP.  It is currently out on Bandcamp as a digital download, as well as limited edition cassette and “handmade DIY CD-R with Sticker Set and Button Set”.  Music can also be streamed through various services here.

(p.s.- I’m including the previous video, as well, for your viewing pleasure)
