It’s official: Seattle’s new boring machine is named “Mudhoney”

Unlike Boaty McBoatface, this one made it to the end, and Mudhoney now has another accolade for their trophy case.

When Seattle’s Ship Canal Water Quality Project put out a call to name their new tunnel boring machine, whose purpose is to dig a 2.7 mile-long tunnel to reduce sewer overflow, over 1,000 suggestions were submitted. Once finalists were named and after 30k+ votes, the machine has now officially been named “Mudhoney” in honor of the famed Seattle alt/rock/grunge band. The “Mudhoney” was the clear winner with over 26k votes. The runner-up, “Sir Digs-a-Lot,” having only received a tad over 6k votes.

Yesterday the band was in attendance at the unveiling of the newly-christened machine. You can check the brief video of that ceremony below.

Mudhoney’s most recent album, Digital Garbage, was released in 2018 on Sub-Pop Records. You can check out that album, and more, at Mudhoney’s Bandcamp page.
