Gritty Gallant Girl Power
After some well-deserved time off to spend time with her new baby, Suzi Moon is back with a new reissue of All Out. During the 2010’s Moon headed Turbulent Hearts, songwriting and singing lead vocals. These tracks were remastered by the legendary Mass Giorgini at Sonic Iguana Studios. The album contains 20 tunes from Turbulent Hearts catalog. This three piece creates a fullness that could easily contend with any larger band. Heavy guitar tones, Moon’s strong vocals, and powerful drum beats fill the album.
“Panic” busts out from the start in a high energy blaze. Moon’s sultry vocals shine in this number. “Not That Kinda Girl” is about a woman who refuses to be tied down. “Running wild/running free/that’s the way it’s supposed to be. Breaking hearts/breaking rules.” Girl power to the max, Moon lets us know she doesn’t need a man to bring her down. Love this one for its independent message.
“Never Getting Over You”- Classic tale of heartache. Catchy, bluesy single that relates the story of a woman getting dumped and the after effects of it all. Lies, regret, anger… “through the light/through the dark”. A bridge where she exclaims “Cause I wanted what you never wanted/ couldn’t finish what we started” ending with a rage-filled “I’ll show you!!” A cathartic chant to challenge one to move on.
With to the point lyrics and a charismatic chorus “I don’t’ care no more/ what are you cryin’ for?” “Cryin’” delivers exactly what it set out to do. “Notice Me” takes with a snappy drum beat and a toe-tapping rhythm. This one likely translates perfectly live inviting everyone to sing along. Groovy quiet/loud style throughout the piece gives it a punchy cool edge.
Cue the bassline and “Walkin Away” burns out of the starting gate. Another captivating chorus ending with “we both know/you gotta let me go.” “Another Thing Coming’” is a warning about love. “A girls gotta stay smart/cause love is a game/and damn it’s hard/when you dig someone”. The bridge features a hip breakdown with a dedication to heartbreakers and troublemakers.
The album continues on with more ditties about broken hearts and the trials of trying to find love while remaining a strong independent woman which many of us can certainly get behind. This one is easy to listen to and fun to sing along to. Moon delivers as the fierce and veracious narrator throughout the album. Turbulent Hearts found a formula for composing that works and they stick to it. Fast paced rock n’ roll anthems about love and loss all in under a few minutes a song.
Lori Dee has been a lover of music since she first laid eyes on MTV. Going through the phases of pop, rock, and hair metal, one night in ’92 changed her life when she discovered punk. She fell in love after the coolest first date seeing the Ramones and Social Distortion. This mom of 3 still drags herself to shows and if you find yourself in Chicago come up and say hi and don’t let the minivan or the RBF scare you.
