NYC’s Loveletter are on the cusp of the release of their debut EP Testament, out 07 Jun 2024 (2022’s three-song Demo notwithstanding). This trio plays a style of sludgy, fuzzy guitar rock with some proto-punk tendencies, as evidenced by the first pre-release single “Prophets” from the end of April.
Now TGEFM is proud to premiere the second single from the EP, “Dead Weight.” This one definitely leans more into that pounding, fuzzy rock sound but, as the the title says, is anything but dead weight itself.
Guitarist/vocalist Gabriella Zappia relates the original of the song:
This is kind of the foundation of Loveletter: heavy sludge, throbbing basslines, fuzz guitar and massive drums. The contrast in the B part, where the bass takes over the melody, adds some light to shape the darkness. You’ve got to be economical with a three piece.
We wanted the recordings to sound as live as possible so that’s how we tracked it, all together in the same room so everything feels a bit off the rails. I’d worked with Martin Bisi before and knew his style and the cavernous space at his studio would make the sound as big as possible. Legendary dude, with solid instincts—everyone loves Martin. We finally delivered it to Sarah Register, asking to master it as loud as human ears would allow and then some. She graciously accepted the challenge and still made all the frequencies sound gorgeous and rich.
The band will be holding an EP release party in Brooklyn on the day off. See the event poster below and, underneath, preorder, streaming, and social links.
