What goes together better than the classic media franchise Mobile Suit Gundam and punk rock? Well, probably a lot of things, but after you hear what we’ve got for you today, you might be as hard-pressed as we are to name some of them.
Spacenoidz is a new, Gundam-themed Ramonescore/pop-punk band, and TGEFM is super-excited to announce their debut album and premiere the first single/video. The song, titled “Big Zam,” comes off of the upcoming LP Colony Drop, which is due out 03 Jan 2022 via OUTLOUD! RECORDS. (full disclosure, under my other hat as a freelance illustrator, I did the cover art for the album)
Spacenoidz is the brainchild of pop-punk virtuoso and Gundam super-fan Pat McVay (which you may also know as the guitarist/backing vocalist for Indiana’s The Putz). “Big Zam” takes its name from the giant mobile armor piloted by Dozle Zabi in the original Gundam TV series, but in the hands of Spacenoidz it also becomes a catchy tune about one of the more dynamic characters from the story. As Pat relates:
The key players on both sides of the One Year War are very human and as such possess complex traits and personalities. Dozle Zabi is a prime example. Loving husband and father, compassionate military commander, and dedicated Zeon warrior. This video and song attempt to highlight these many sides to the most likely noblest, but ultimately flawed, son of the Zabi family. Not to mention the fact that it’s a pretty damn rad pop punk tune.
As a huge Gundam geek myself, I heartily agree. But you don’t have to be a fan to enjoy this catchy tune, which is just one of twelve awesome tracks from the new LP. It stands just fine on its own.
While Gundam is a sprawling franchise covering 40+ years, the debut album Colony Drop focuses entirely on characters and scenarios from the original TV series, which ran from 1979-1980. Astute fans will already have noted that January 3rd is the also the future date, in the storyline, where antagonist forces send an enormous space colony crashing into earth, smashing into Sydney and obliterating most of Australia and resulting in the deaths of billions of people. This leads to the official start of the One Year War which is the backdrop of the original Gundam series, as well as many subsequent stories.
