Premiere: This hole’s as “Black as the Sea” in new single by Feral Vices

In May Louisville duo Feral Vices broke their year+ silence with “Karma,” their first new music since the Dec 2021 With Offerings EP. TGEFM was lucky enough to get to premiere that new track, and now Feral Vices are back with their newest single, their third of the year, “Black as the Sea,” which officially releases this Thursday, but TGEFM has got it for you right here, right now.

The single comes to us a a lyric video, and continues the band’s foray into some more power-pop/alt-rock realms. It’s heavy, is what I’m saying.

“Black As The Sea” started as just a couple of guitar riffs that were built into a few different versions over the course of a couple of months of just playing around and then basically flipping the entire song around in the studio with nearly every part of the song moving into a different spot.

The song was initially sort of a love song lyrically, but with the movement of everything, the whole song felt like it had become something else entirely. Alexander had an alternate version of the first verse and the line “You want to take it from me, but I would give it to you” in a note and they felt like they fit really well with the tone of the music and the rest of the lyrics followed that. The song kind of rides the moment between the realization that you’re in a bad relationship but also still wanting to be with the other person. It becomes this weird sort of Limbo or Purgatory-type place where you’re being pulled in two different directions but inevitably are pulled into this place of resentment of the relationship and everything.

The song reads more like it’s about a romantic relationship with some of the language, but the motivation behind it was the loss of a couple of meaningful friendships during an incredibly tough time and trying to come to terms with that and if moving on was even the right thing to do.
