Review: Dave Parasite – “Swept Away” (single)

Something To Do Records, July 1, 2020

Dave Parasite is a power pop beast.  Too bad this is just a single song.

Dave Parasite, the main guy behind Parasites, has only released one other solo recording during a career that dates back thirty-plus years, the Back to Demo release way back in the 90’s.  For this one off on the consistently engaging “Something To Do Music For Something To Do People!” monthly series, Parasite takes on Ryan Manhole’s “Swept Away”, a minute-and-a-half buzzer.

Opening with some bit-crushed noise, the song goes into a jangly power pop song before the buzzsaw guitar comes in around the forty second mark and sticks with it to the noisy feedback-drenched end fifty seconds or so later.  “Swept Away” has some wonderfully melancholy hooks and the words are pretty simple (there are only four lines) and great.  My favorite is the repeated ending mantra “I saw you, and then I slept all day”.  Not sure what it is that makes me like the line so much, but it hits just right.  Maybe a nonchalant lazy summer thing in my head.

And then it’s all over.  One song, no fuss.  This is a pretty splendid entry into the “Something To Do Music” series, one totally worth checking out (as are many of the songs in the series).  As I find myself thinking with a lot of the “Something To Do” releases, I only wish there was more than a song to hear.

You might like this if:

  • You’re into simple great songs and have the kind of attention span that won’t get frustrated with a quick one-shot offering

You might not if:

  • You‘re not into songs and melodies and hooks and all that stuff
