Review: Glitoris – “The Slut Power Sessions – Live at the Basement”

Buttercup Records / MGM – 30 Oct 2020

Lovely and brutal. A wonderful combination.

Glitoris Bitches! Glitoris are a 4-piece from Canberra, Australia and they are as uncompromising as they are outspoken. Ever since their debut EP “The Disgrace” in 2016 they have been blasting their way through the Australian rock scene with full force.

The Slut Power Sessions – Live at the Basement is a nod to their most recent single “Slut Power,” which was released with an accompanying video clip on February 14, 2020. That release date was right on the cusp of the growing Corona pandemic, very unfortunate since their original (touring) plans no doubt were railroaded by this. Instead they recorded a show in their hometown in June of 2020 and released it as a live EP.

Opener “Warriors” is a nice pounding punk track with which Glitoris immediately sets the tone for their fierce and take-no-bullshit attitude. “The Policy” is more mid paced driving heavy rock with some nice vocal harmonies. Then the US President Donald Trump is put through the ringer in “Trump Card” in which some of his many disgusting statements are used against him. Their latest single “Slut Power”, in which a frightening collage of sexist derogatory comments are used as the lyrics, is an angry bulldozer of a song. A perfect anthem for all those who are rightfully angry about the way women are still being denied their full and equal rights.

Despite the “edited” feel of the live album (a selection of tracks out of a bigger set no doubt) the energy of Glitoris really comes to the fore in this release as does their relentless activism which they make no qualms about. The political views they hold find a direct way into their art. The deliciously uncompromising rest of the album (“Cock Rock”, “Sex Video” and “Pole”) makes it that Glitoris reminds me of a mix between The Slits, The Menstrual Cramps and also some Rage Against The Machine. Lovely and brutal. A wonderful combination.
