Review: Suzi Moon – “Animal”

Pirates Press Records – 01 Apr 2022

Suzi Moon adds another notch to her belt with her impressive second EP.

Suzi Moon continues the gradual roll-out of her solo career with her second EP, Animal. The suspense seems sort of unnecessary since she’s arriving fully formed. After stints in Civet, Turbulent Hearts, L.A. Machina and more, she knows exactly the sound she wants to deliver. The three songs on Animal definitely deliver. She also knows how to maximize her cover art. Her debut, Call the Shots, had a kind of S&M vibe. Animal is more like a classy but sexy vampire feel.

Suzi Moon writes songs that are one part punk, one part glam, and one part straight up rock and roll. They’re also catchy as hell and oozing with sex appeal. She’s been playing these three songs live for a while, so if you’ve been lucky enough to see her, they may sound familiar. “Sonic Attraction” kicks things off and is a great opener. It’s got some gritty punk, a killer riff and guitar solo, and an arena worthy sing along chorus.

The title track is at least a second cousin to W.A.S.P.’s “Animal (Fuck Like a Beast)”, and maybe Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer” too. Although Moon was born well after hair metal’s heyday, a little of its influence managed to sneak into her psyche. “Gold Record Autograph” could have been a huge hit alongside Poison and Warrant on MTV in the late ‘80s, and is still ear candy today. Suzi Moon is two EPs into her solo career, and she has yet to release a bad track. With the promise of a full length later this year, the sky’s the limit.

For vinyl fiends: Animal is available on neon yellow twelve inch vinyl. (The art just wouldn’t pack the same punch on a seven inch.) Like her debut, all three songs are on both sides of the record.
