Review: The Abruptors – “Noticeably Cheerless”

Asian Man Records – 24 Feb 2022

The Abruptors get emotional and kick up the pizzazz with their new sound.

Noticeably Cheerless is ‘ sophomore LP, and shows their growth both musically and lyrically since their last LP, 2019’s Love and Other Disasters. The lyrics tackle some heavy topics and personal emotions that many listeners may relate to. Although the subject matters may be about struggle and anxiety the music is, as expected, fun with an upbeat vibe. Their current line up is a five piece but, with members of the band playing multiple instruments (eg- Toni LaMantia covers keys and saxophone), many of the tracks sound much larger. Musically the songs sound full and complete with a big band sound.

The album starts things off with “Best Wishes”, featuring guest guitarist Dan Potthast (MU330/ Bruce Lee Band), which was a pre-release single in the summer of 2022. It is mid-tempo paced with catchy lyrics and good energy. This track is a great opener to set the tone for the record, even though the lyrics are about someone you’re happy to see leave.

“Waiting Forever” is a smooth, jazzy, more mellow song with Toni taking care of the vocals. This song has a darker tone and the lyrics speak of loneliness and thoughts of being alone and free. “Who What Where” was also previously released as a single back in January, 2021, and is more upbeat with some great organ sounds and solid horns tunes on this track.

“Just Another Day” features dual vocals by Toni and Mike Geraci (vocals/guitar) about someone who thinks they are an underdog but in reality, they are the top dog, at least that’s how I interpreted it. Another previously released single “When I Change” has an organ solo, and who doesn’t like a good organ solo?

Whether you’re a long-time diehard ska fanatic or just discovering the genre, if you’re into the current ska renaissance, this album is worth checking out for yourself.  If you’re not that familiar with The Abruptors, this Buffalo, NY, ska/rocksteady group’s new LP, just might make you a new fan. I know it has for me.
