Review: Young Francis Hi Fi – “I Wanna Hold You Tight (Tonite)”

Self-released, 27 July, 2020

Young Francis Hi Fi makes some friends and records a punchy power pop punk song.

Brighton, UK’s Young Francis has been releasing a bunch of stuff by himself for a while now.  Under the Young Francis Hi Fi name, he’s now found friends (Jimi Dymond, Mac Daddy, and Danny Joe Handsome) and has released this full band recording of the single “I Wanna Hold You Tight (Tonite)”.

“I Wanna Hold You Tight (Tonite)” is a super fast power pop punk song.  The stuttering guitar hook rocketing straight out of the gate is cool as all get out.  And from there it just gets better.  The vocal hooks on the chorus are going to hold you tight to the song and when they decide to break things down with a simmering “wanna get away” bridge, you’re likely to swoon.  It’s pure high-energy goodness, getting in and out in a minute and a half.  Really, it reminds me quite a bit of a bunch of Steve Adamyk’s stuff.  And I love Steve Adamyk, so yea.

“I Wanna Hold You Tight (Tonite)” is a great one-off single, hitting all the right buttons – manic pace, hooky guitars, addictive vocal lines, and a build-up bridge.  It’s sort of ridiculous that they can jam all that good stuff into a minute thirty.  Recommended.

Favorite song: umm…“I Wanna Hold You Tight (Tonite)”

Favorite moment: the “wanna get away” bridge

Favorite whatever else: I kinda dig the muscle car on the cover
