Review: Zoanoids – “Biollante’s Revenge”

Self-released, May 25, 2020

Where did Zoanoids come from?  And how are they hitting just right?

This is gonna be a quick review.  I have no idea how Zoanoids have existed below the radar as they have.  Coming out of Kalamazoo, Michigan, the band has a 2019 demo to their name (that’s really good too) and now this single, “Biollante’s Revenge”, effectively serving as a teaser for an upcoming record that is coming out on Hey Pizza and I Buy Records sometime down the line.

“Biollante’s Revenge” is a quick sci-fi punk song that blasts by in a minute and a half.  The song has it all.  The drums are pulverizing.  The guitars are lightning quick and filled with hooks, even with a great descending single-note guitar lead.  The bass is melodic and rhythmic.  The vocals, slightly buried in the mix, are unaffected and clean and matter-of-fact.  And the sum is even better, burning bright and quick and going away.  It’s an awesome song that I can’t stop listening to, reminding me of The Lillingtons in such a good way.

After hearing “Biollante’s Revenge”, I went back and listened to the demo on repeat a bunch, too, and have fallen hard.  I haven’t been this excited for a band’s debut in a long time.  This needs to be heard.
