Atlanta indie-punks The Carolyn are preparing to release the new EP Harmful History on 9 June from 59X Records (pre-order). Influenced by the melodic punk bands from the late 90s and early 2000s, the record is filled with catchy choruses and lyrics about sleep deprivation, obscure pop culture references, and existential crisis.
Thank you so much for agreeing to this interview. Congrats on the upcoming release of “Harmful History.” What should TGEFM readers know about The Carolyn and the studio experience on this record?
Well, if you’re into the whole melodic-punk org-core thing, you’ll probably dig us at least a little.
Not a whole lot was different about recording this EP, but it’s definitely our strongest release thus far.
You are looking to hit the road in Europe shortly, which song off the new record are you most looking forward to playing live and what can we expect from live The Carolyn performances?
“LBB” is probably the most fun to play and I’m excited to see how it goes over in Germany. Our sets are pretty brisk and I expect Europe to be much the same. We like to play our best stuff quickly and have a good time.
One of our obligatory questions in these interviews also tends to be the one I have found most important on a personal level. Who are some bands on your radar that TGEFM readers may not know about, but you think they should know about?
Tired Radio, hands down. Super great dudes, amazing songwriting.
Not to put the cart before the horse, but after the release of Harmful History, what is next for The Carolyn?
I think we are mainly going to focus on a new record. It’s pretty much already written, we just have to flesh it out during rehearsal and obviously figure out a recording schedule.
Roll of the Dice is a short interview format with a variable amount of questions. A Pair of dice is rolled and the total, between 2 and 12, is the amount of questions we can ask. All questions are given to the interviewee(s) at once, and no follow-ups are allowed. The interview may be lightly edited for content and clarity.
Bad Dad (occasionally called Ed) has been on the periphery of the punk and punk-adjacent scene for over twenty years. While many contributors to this site have musical experience and talent, Ed’s musical claim to fame comes from his time in arguably the most punk rock Blockbuster Video district in NJ where he worked alongside members of Blanks 77, Best Hit TV and Brian Fallon. He is more than just an awful father to his 2 daughters, he is also a dreadful husband, a subpar writer, a terrible dresser and has a severe deficiency in all things talent… but hey, at least he’s self-aware, amirite?
