Roll of the Dice: 4 questions with The Goodies

San Diego’s reggae/rock/soul duo are preparing for the release of their new EP to kick off 2024. Ahead of its release, TGEFM had the chance for a short roll of the dice interview.

Thank you so much for agreeing to this interview.  Congrats on the upcoming EP release. Unfortunately the dice were quite fickle and only gave us 4 questions.  What should TGEFM readers know about The Goodies, your sound and what you’ve got in pipeline beyond the EP for 2024?

Thanks so much for having us and wanting to know more about The Goodies! The Goodies were both heavily influenced by punk and ska as kids, Justin in Detroit and Zan in San Diego both had prevalent punk scenes. Our music is upbeat, fun, disruptive, and different. We have so many different influences in multiple genres, and it really shows through our music. After the release of our first EP in January and plan to release multiple singles and a second EP before summer 2024. We have an arsenal of amazing music to share and we’re so excited for our fans to hear the music. Beyond the release of the EPs and singles, we are also planning to tour nationally in 2024 with tour dates to be announced soon, so be sure to follow our socials for all the “Goodies”

You’ve recently been releasing a slew of covers from all sorts of artists.  What album or band or significant singles made you go “Yeah, this is what I want to do”  Not just an influence but who or what was the catalyst? Which of these covers has been the most fun to put together?

There were a number of reasons that we pursued doing these covers. We love all these artists and bands and the influence they had on music  is so profound to say the least, so in a way it was a tribute, it was also an opportunity to study songwriting melodies etc from the masters also a good challenge and test for us, and most definitely a great way to provide some quality uplifting vibes for our fans on a daily basis. One of our favorites was “You Might Think” by The Cars. We had such a great response from that song that we recorded a full version that will also be included on our upcoming EP in January.

You’ve said the recently released single “Around The World” was a “fasterpiece,” being put together in a single day.  How does that style of song-writing affect the process?  What are the benefits and obstacles you found?

As our good friend and colleague Ronnie King says “fasterpeice masterpiece” and it definitely feels like when the song flows, it’s gonna be a banger! It gives you that good feeling! The only thing is that these songs have a mind of their own and some may take a little longer than others but at the end of the day it always seems to work best when you let it take on its own life.

One of our obligatory questions in these interviews also tends to be the one I have found most important on a personal level. Who are some bands on your radar that TGEFM readers may not know about, but you think they should know about?

Hmmmm… so many great bands!
The Pretenders
The Skints
Fortunate Youth

Roll of the Dice is a short interview format with a variable amount of questions. A pair of dice is rolled and the total, between 2 and 12, is the amount of questions we can ask. All questions are given to the interviewee(s) at once, and no follow-ups are allowed. The interview may be lightly edited for content and clarity.
