Roll of the Dice is a short interview format with a variable amount of questions. A Pair of dice is rolled and the total, between 2 and 12, is the amount of questions we can ask. All questions are given to the interviewee(s) at once, and no follow-ups are allowed. The interview may be lightly edited for content and clarity.
Alt-pop trio Goldview are about to drop the new EP Chapters of an Open Heart on 10 March, but first agreed to roll the dice with TGEFM first. So check out brothers Nathan and Newton Huynh’s replies to our short five question interview.
Thank you so much for agreeing to this interview. Congrats, in advance on the release of the Chapters of an Open Heart EP! What should new listeners know about Goldview?
(Nathan) Thank you. Listeners should know that the members of Goldview are really big fans of art and music. We all love music and hope to inspire everyone that listens to our music. We have always felt that chasing dreams is tough, but you should do it anyway. We are a band from the San Francisco Bay Area. San Jose specifically.
What is it about music that you are most passionate about? What motivates you to keep writing?
(Newton) The thing we are most passionate about is creating something emotional and relatable. When it comes to music, there are so many ways to go about it. We want to create songs that make us feel something, but also potentially make the listeners feel something. The thing that motivates us to keep writing is creating a song that is innovative. Each time we enter the studio, we hope to create something fresh and exciting.
You’ve got some heavy hitters like Ace Enders and Nick Bruzzese involved in production on this record. How did that all come about and how did they impact the songwriting and recording process?
(Nathan) Working with Producers has always been something that we felt was natural. It facilitates the project and gives new perspectives. We worked with Sam Pura, Nik Bruzzese, and Ace Enders on this project. We first worked with Nik and Ace in 2018 on our first EP under Goldview. Nik messaged us online in 2018. Since then, we kept a great friendship and bond. In 2019, we worked with Sam Pura on an EP. We are very big fans of the music Sam has produced. For this new release, we wanted to collaborate altogether.
(Newton) Ace was heavily involved in co-writing the songs and producing them with us. Ace understood that we wanted to incorporate more influence from Pop music and made our vision come to life. Sam Pura is an amazing Producer and understands everything in the creative aspect. We cannot imagine working on music without him. Sam does not take shortcuts and it is worth it. In the studio, Sam pushes us to make the best songs that we could and takes a lot of influence from Pop music. Sam re-amps with real amplifiers and pedals when it comes to guitars and bass. It gives a large tone and the songs feel real.
(Nathan) Both Sam and Ace were great with structuring the songs during the writing process. –
One of our obligatory questions in these interviews also tends to be the one I have found most important on a personal level. Who are some bands on your radar that TGEFM readers may not know about, but you think they should?
(Nathan) Some artists and bands readers should check out are Jacob Price, A Better Way, Charlie Pineda, The Pure, Near Dark, and Greyed Out.
Beyond the release of Chapters of an Open Heart, what’s next for Goldview?
(Nathan) Beyond the release of Chapters of An Open Heart, we are hoping to record a live session soon. The new songs are exciting and have a lot of new things musically in terms of the creative side of it. It will take some time to translate them live, but that is the next step. We are thinking about a live session in a studio. After that, most likely live shows. Thank you again.
Bad Dad (occasionally called Ed) has been on the periphery of the punk and punk-adjacent scene for over twenty years. While many contributors to this site have musical experience and talent, Ed’s musical claim to fame comes from his time in arguably the most punk rock Blockbuster Video district in NJ where he worked alongside members of Blanks 77, Best Hit TV and Brian Fallon. He is more than just an awful father to his 2 daughters, he is also a dreadful husband, a subpar writer, a terrible dresser and has a severe deficiency in all things talent… but hey, at least he’s self-aware, amirite?
