You may know Leah Martin-Brown from her time fronting rock outfit Evol Walks, but TGEFM is excited to get to know Leah a bit better as she branches out with her new solo project. Lucky for us, she was willing to oblige and rolled the Dice in the latest of our interview series.
Thank you so much for agreeing to this interview and congrats on the success of “Boys,” “Shush” and “Hysterical Love.”. What can you tell me about your solo project, your sound and what you want it to represent to your listeners?
This solo project is a different side than seen in my previous work. It has more of a “pop/rock” flavour which has been an incredibly fun vibe switch to work with. I will always lean more towards the rock and roll but this project, this first album in particular, is helping bring out elements of my artistry I had not previously thought to explore.
I would love for my listeners to hear these tracks and feel empowered as well as hear the fun, tongue in cheek naughtiness that is present in the lyrics and instrumentation.
Your upcoming record is produced by THE Mutt Lange. I would think the presence of a producer with his resume would put my personal anxiety through the roof. Was there any added pressure or need to impress working with such a goddamned legend? What advice did he bring into the room to help you bring out your best in the studio?
I definitely felt the pressure, especially in the first stages when we were working through the very first track. In my mind there was always a risk that he’d hear my vocals on the songs and say “No, this isn’t who we need/the sound we want- she’s out!”. I pushed that anxiety aside and just focused on being the best vocalist I was capable of being and prayed that was enough- and it was! Which was a HUGE relief obviously!
One of our obligatory questions in these interviews also tends to be the one I have found most important on a personal level. Who are some bands on your radar that TGEFM readers may not know about, but you think they should?
I am a huge fan of Puscifer– although I’d say most people probably know who they are already! I also love Parkway Drive (again… huge band so everyone probably knows them already) and Zeal & Ardor. All huge favourites of mine.
What’s next for you?
I am headed off to Stockholm in 2 weeks to start writing the second album with Mutt Lange & Tony Nilsson as well as shoot 3 music videos for the upcoming singles. I am very excited!
Was there anything I missed that you’d like to share or dive deeper into with our readers?
There is a LOT of new music coming out and I cannot wait to share it!
Roll of the Dice is a short interview format with a variable amount of questions. A pair of dice is rolled and the total, between 2 and 12, is the amount of questions we can ask. All questions are given to the interviewee(s) at once, and no follow-ups are allowed. The interview may be lightly edited for content and clarity.
Bad Dad (occasionally called Ed) has been on the periphery of the punk and punk-adjacent scene for over twenty years. While many contributors to this site have musical experience and talent, Ed’s musical claim to fame comes from his time in arguably the most punk rock Blockbuster Video district in NJ where he worked alongside members of Blanks 77, Best Hit TV and Brian Fallon. He is more than just an awful father to his 2 daughters, he is also a dreadful husband, a subpar writer, a terrible dresser and has a severe deficiency in all things talent… but hey, at least he’s self-aware, amirite?
