Roll of the Dice is a short interview format with a variable amount of questions. A Pair of dice is rolled and the total, between 2 and 12, is the amount of questions we can ask. All questions are given to the interviewee(s) at once, and no follow-ups are allowed. The interview may be lightly edited for content and clarity.
Miranda and The Beat are rock band that defy subgenres. The California-to-Brooklyn transplants have honed their skills on the grimy stages across the five boroughs and beyond. In preparation of their self-titled LP dropping on 26 May (pre-order), the titular Miranda Zipse participated in TGEFM’s latest Roll of the Dice interview. Check it out below.
Thank you so much for agreeing to this interview. Congrats on the upcoming release of your self-titled debut! What should TGEFM readers know about Miranda and the Beat and this record?
The party don’t start until you bump this record.
What album, band, or even, significant singles made you go “Yeah, this is what I want to do” Not just an influence but who or what was the catalyst?
The first time I heard Enter The Wu Tang (36 Chambers) was a huge turning point in my life. To me hip hop is the epitome of rock n roll.
You guys did a good amount of touring the US and Canada last year, has the post-pandemic world/mindset affected your attitudes or habits for live performances??
On Halloween I played in a band where the singer shit on the stage, you tell me.
The world has been going through some shit over the last few years. What effect, if any, have the cultural and political landscapes of the last few years had on your music?
You know, I’ve gotten really into AM radio and I decided to ditch my cell phone and get a pager to stay off the grid. Shout out to Old Codger, miss you buddy.
One of our obligatory questions in these interviews also tends to be the one I have found most important on a personal level. Who are some bands on your radar that TGEFM readers may not know about, but you think they should know about?
My favorite band that I discovered this year is Model/Actriz, although I think collectively our favorite New York City bands are Bipolar and The Mystery Lights.
After the self-titled release, what’s next for the members of Miranda and the Beat?
Be on the lookout for our second record, It Was Dylan All Along.
Bad Dad (occasionally called Ed) has been on the periphery of the punk and punk-adjacent scene for over twenty years. While many contributors to this site have musical experience and talent, Ed’s musical claim to fame comes from his time in arguably the most punk rock Blockbuster Video district in NJ where he worked alongside members of Blanks 77, Best Hit TV and Brian Fallon. He is more than just an awful father to his 2 daughters, he is also a dreadful husband, a subpar writer, a terrible dresser and has a severe deficiency in all things talent… but hey, at least he’s self-aware, amirite?
