Roll of the Dice: 7 questions with Structure Sounds

With the release of their extremely well-received album Light Up Your Sorrow, Structure Sounds is picking up steam. To celebrate the outstanding Wiretap Records release, Guitarist/lead vocalist Sean Carney joined TGEFM for a Roll of the Dice interview. Check out the album, and learn more about their history, what they’re listening to and what’s next for the Rhode Island quartet.

Thank you so much for agreeing to this interview!  Congrats on the release of Light Up Your Sorrow?  What should our readers know about Structure Sounds, your history and your sound?

Thank you! We are a new band of seasoned players coming from previous bands The Scandals, Howl and The Down and Outs. We are a punk rock band that is not afraid to take chances on our sound from time to time. We are also fans of cold beer and solid hangs.

What album or band or significant singles made you go “Yeah, this is what I want to do”  Not just an influence but who or what was the catalyst?

I went to my first punk show when I was 11 or 12. It was Bad Religion‘s Process of Belief tour with Less than Jake and Hot Water Music. That show shaped the rest of my life for better or worse haha.

We’ve all got a few, what is your biggest regret? A gig you turned down, advice you didn’t take, what one thing do you wish you handled differently as a musician?

That’s a tough one. My last band The Scandals were lucky to open on some bigger shows and tours. Looking back I feel like a lot of those big moments were a whirlwind. Looking back I think we all could have taken a breath and just enjoyed the moment a little more.

What’s the state of the scene from your point of view?  We are living in a “just deal with COVID” world and everything about this timeline is some level of completely fucked, but since 2020, it does seem like the live experience has been rejuvenated for the crowds and artists.  How has the live scene changed over these last few years?

COVID put a lot of things into perspective. The genesis of this band came out of a need to play again. I think there has been a lot of excitement especially in Providence these last few years and you can feel that at the shows. There does seem to be a higher level of appreciation for what we have which is a bright light in the dark world we have all found ourselves in.

One of our obligatory questions in these interviews also tends to be the one I have found most important on a personal level. Who are some bands on your radar that TGEFM readers may not know about, but you think they should?

Awesome! Yeah, Neck Scars have been putting out incredible records. Mercy Union, The Callouts, Salem Wolves, Divided Heaven are all worth a spin.

What’s next for Structure Sounds?

We are unbelievably stoked to get this record out and do my favorite part which is playing the songs. We have a run of shows in the North East for the release weekend. After that we will hopefully have more festivals/shows to announce.

Was there anything I missed that you’d like to share or dive deeper into with our readers?

Thanks for checking us out and listening. Come see us at a show, grab a record if you can! Beers on our guitarist Zach.

11.4 – Wallingford, CT – Cherry St. Station

Roll of the Dice is a short interview format with a variable amount of questions. A pair of dice is rolled and the total, between 2 and 12, is the amount of questions we can ask. All questions are given to the interviewee(s) at once, and no follow-ups are allowed. The interview may be lightly edited for content and clarity.
