Chicago area quartet Bad Planning have been busy. After releasing an EP in 2019, several singles, and with their debut LP on the horizon, TGEFM got in touch for a quick round of Roll of the Dice. We rolled a THREE.
1) Well… I rolled a three for you guys, which isn’t the worst. But it’s pretty bad. Sorry! So, yeah… What’s up with Bad Planning? You recently signed to Jump Start Records, and your social media says there’s a lot to come in 2022. Care to fill us in on anything you’re allowed to talk about?
No worries! Bad is in our name so we will make a 3 work. Bad Planning has had an exciting last year to say the least. We started with Jump Start Records back in February 2021. We’ve been listening to Jump Start bands like Crucial Dudes and A Wilhelm Scream for years, so it’s rather surreal for us. Big shoutout to Jeremy Myers and the Jump Start team for taking us on and working with us the past few months.
2022 is going to hold a lot of firsts for the band. We will be releasing our first full length album in spring 2022, along with some huge shows throughout the spring and summer. Needless to say, we are excited. We can’t wait to share this new album with our fans and listeners. It’s got new stuff, old stuff, angry stuff, sad stuff, sentimental stuff, and really everything in between. We can confidently say it’s the best music we’ve written so far, so keep an eye out for a release date announcement. It’s coming soon!
So that’s what’s up!
2) If I understand correctly, you’ve gone through a line-up change recently (recently being within the past few years, I guess). How has that alteration changed your music, and your music-writing process?
The band’s lineup did change only a few months before entering the studio for this upcoming album. Jack and Aaron have both been members of Bad Planning in earlier years and have been long time friends with our singer and guitar player Alex. They fit right in with little adjustment period.
Our song writing process became much more collaborative after the lineup change. Alex had some good support with the vocal and guitar melodies from Jack, and a dedicated bass player in Aaron to write the bass lines. This is also the largest batch of songs our drummer Miles has made with us, and he absolutely killed it.
What resulted was a much more well-rounded and dynamic Bad Planning sound, and we are super happy with it.
3) Name some bands that TGEFM readers aren’t listening to, but really should be.
Why not shout out some friends and incredible bands we’ve played with recently? High Wire, Honey Creek, Wolf Rd, Keep For Cheap, Heart to Gold, Tiny Kingdoms, Action Adventure
Bad Planning can be reached at their socials (FB, IG) and streaming (Bandcamp, Spotify)
Roll of the Dice is a short interview format with a variable amount of questions. A Pair of dice is rolled and the total, between 2 and 12, is the amount of questions we can ask. All questions are given to the interviewee(s) at once, and no follow-ups are allowed.
the white drew carey (aka – Jeff Sorley) is the founder and head editor of TGEFM. He’s lived (outside of) Chicago, Madison WI, (ugh) Penn State, Lyon FR, Oxford UK, central New Jersey, and now within earshot of SFO in the Bay Area. When not scouring the web for more great bands and labels to post about, he also spends time drawing (mostly) silly sci-fi and anime stuff under the name Asplenia Studios.
