When I started this music news blog, I didn’t expect that I would use the tag “8-bit” twice in the first month, but here we are.
Members of ska/punk/indie act Flying Racoon Suit (you can see where this is going) have created and arranged cover songs done in an 8-bit style (think original NES) under the moniker Ska Simulator. Whether or not the original songs (which include tracks by artists such as Omnigone, Hans Gruber and the Diehards, The Bruce Lee Band, and more) were ska or not, they are interpreted as such here.
Normally this would be a novelty release, and it IS available as a name-your-price download on Bandcamp. But Ska Simulator has cleverly tied it into charity, as all proceeds will go to the Nature Conservancy. So plunk down a buck or two, and jam out to some cleverly covered tunes.
You can check out the lead track “Burn It Down” (originally by The Taj Mahal Trio) below.
the white drew carey (aka – Jeff Sorley) is the founder and head editor of TGEFM. He’s lived (outside of) Chicago, Madison WI, (ugh) Penn State, Lyon FR, Oxford UK, central New Jersey, and now within earshot of SFO in the Bay Area. When not scouring the web for more great bands and labels to post about, he also spends time drawing (mostly) silly sci-fi and anime stuff under the name Asplenia Studios.
