Voluntary Hazing hit the right notes in new single “Skemsco”

California 12-piece (12 PIECE!!!) ska/ska-punk act Voluntary Hazing have released a new single as a lyric video. The track is called “Skemsco” and, I bet you’re thinking “what’s that?” Here’s what vocalist Kayla Renelle has to say about it:

It’s an emotional, dancey alt rock song with thick, colorful horn parts. Lyrically, the song explores coming to terms with personal shortcomings and disappointment, and achieving a sense of freedom when finally accepting one’s own imperfections. Sonically, “Skemsco” is influenced by three vastly different genres we love: Ska+emo+disco (hence our made-up word “Skemsco”). Is that pretentious? Outrageous? Just kind of silly? Potentially so, but that’s the kind of chaos you get when 12 college marching band geeks come together to make their own music. (P.S. That solo in the bridge is actually a violin.)

What I like about it is that it has this kind kind of 70s funk (ska-funk?) feeling to it that makes me think of classic films like Black Belt Jones.

You can check out the new single and lyric video below, and don’t forget to hit up their Bandcamp or Spotify for more, if you like what you hear.
