It’s Thursday. The day before the weekend (for most of us, that is). With the whiplash way everything (waves arms around) has been going lately, don’t you deserve a treat?
Well, TGEFM is here for you in the best way possible. Because we’ve got the new album, My Escape, from Chicago’s BlackWristBand for you a day early aaaaaand, if you’re in the greater metropolitan area of the the Second City, you can listen to this a bunch of times and then go to the album release show tonight, and sing along. You’ll be so cool. Well, cooler than you already are. Yeah, you.
Speaking of cool, BlackWristBand is the solo project of multi-instrumentalist John McGeown, and My Escape is his debut album. When asked about the what and why of My Escape, John relates:
This album is a reflection of what it means to create without compromise – raw, unfiltered and honest. It comes from a place of freedom and vulnerability. It’s loud, it’s imperfect, and it’s made with conviction. My hope is that people can relate to it.
Personally, I really get into that third sentence. “It’s loud, it’s imperfect, and it’s made with conviction.” To my ear, that’s a quality that surpasses most others. And you can hear, and feel it throughout the album.
So have a listen below while your coworkers think your dialing in to a meeting, or something (isn’t that what we all do these days). Then GO TO THE SHOW if you can! Details on the gig are below the stream, along with a bunch of BlackWristBand’s links to purchase the album, or support on socials, to keep yourself in the loop.

the white drew carey (aka – Jeff Sorley) is the founder and head editor of TGEFM. He’s lived (outside of) Chicago, Madison WI, (ugh) Penn State, Lyon FR, Oxford UK, central New Jersey, and now within earshot of SFO in the Bay Area. When not scouring the web for more great bands and labels to post about, he also spends time drawing (mostly) silly sci-fi and anime stuff under the name Asplenia Studios.
