First Impressions Review: Fucked Up and The Halluci Nation – “John Wayne Was a Nazi”

Merge Records, 08 Jun 2023

Toronto's have been flying the hardcore flag in one way or another for a long time now.  And while they have had a tendency to venture all over the map (and away from traditional hardcore at times), they've continuously championed hardcore and underground bands, reminding us all where this stuff has come from.  On the newest single from the band, Fucked Up team up with fellow Canadians The Halluci Nation to take on the song “John Wayne Was a Nazi”.

The original was a wild-eyed romp-turned-barnburning sprint that put a nail in the coffin of John Wayne.  No reverence allowed.  Fucked Up and take the song and slow it down a touch, working in a slow-stomp drum machine beat and some power electronics and merging those with some gross distorto-guitar and the always-frothing vocals from Damian Abraham.  The song sounds pretty fucked up (see what I did there?) and leaves me kinda disoriented.  Purists wanting to hear a straight-faced take on the MDC original will wanna look elsewhere, but those looking for a touch of adventure might wanna give this a try.  To be fully forthright, it's not really my kinda thing, and I might not come back to it all that often, but at least it's interesting.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
