First Impressions Review: Lone Wolf – “Ready To Break”

Stardumb Records, 14 Apr 2023

Netherlands band have released a bunch of stuff over the past while, but if I'm being honest, most of what I've heard hasn't landed much with me.  I like the pedigree, but the songs just haven't stuck in my brain all that often.  But maybe that's gonna change.  Earlier this year, they released “Begging Me”, the first single from the upcoming Haze Wave, that I came around on.  Now, they've dropped a second song and video called “Ready To Break”.

The song is a pop punk number, heavy emphasis on the pop part of the formula.  It's got a kick to it, with a really cool melodic hook during the verses that seems to stick with me pretty well.  The bass rattles in the back and the vocal phrasing is memorable.  And when it gets to the chorus, I can tell the song could end up a singalong after giving it more listens.  That said, the song's production is more polished than I'm typically seeking out and the pop-heaviness makes it catchy, but not quite as “raw” as my usual favorites.  Nonetheless, this song and the previous “Begging Me” are good enough to peak my interest and I'm gonna be giving the rest of Lone Wolf's stuff a shot going forward.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
