First Impressions Review: The Beeslys – “Season One”

OUTLOUD! Records, 24 Mar 2023

Well this is exactly the EP I didn't think I needed.  Season One is a new EP by (which appears to me a new vehicle for the ever-prolific Patrick McVay of The Putz, Spacenoidz, The Coruscants, and others).  Much like the themed work of Spacenoidz and Coruscants, The Beeslys take on the US version of “The Office”.  Unsurprisingly, Season One follows the plot of season one of “The Office” over 6 songs.

Musically, the songs on Season One don't revel in the angsty pop punk of The Putz or the Riverdales stomp of Coruscants.  Instead, this is a sort of turn-of-the-century alternative pop rock, reminding me of The Rentals and Fountains Of Wayne.  The synth lines throughout are sugary and addictive, working their way into my brain and I'm guessing sticking around for a while.  The vocal melodies and guitar leads that show up are no slouch either.  The songs mostly stay at a mid-tempo pace, never seeming rushed, but the dynamics are there with quiet-loud stuff popping up in songs like “Diversity Day”, keeping any chance of monotony from setting in.  Lyrically, the songs are cleverly crafted with episode plots being sung from alternately Michael and Dwight's perspectives and any fans of the show will be able to find signposts all over the place.  Favorites include “The World's Best Boss”, “I'm Your Man”, and “Do You Wanna Form An Alliance” (geez, the synths on each get me), and “Who Wants To Work On Saturday” (the chorus destroys).  Being fully up-front, I think I prefer the pop punk directions typically taken by McVay, but this one does it's own tricks pretty right, too.  I enjoyed it quite a lot and am likely to make my way back to this with some frequency.

  • Favorite Song: “The World's Best Boss” or “Who Wants To Work On Saturday”
  • Album Release Date: 24 Mar 2023
  • Purchase/Pre-Order/Pre-Save: Bandcamp

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
