Review: Lake Shark – “The First Four Songs”

Self released – 1 July 2021

Lake Shark goes for ALL

is a band that formed only a year ago and have managed to write, record and release their first EP, The First Four Songs, which features five songs and I just realized that while writing this. That's funny! The members in the band found a common ground in their obsession with Descendents and ALL.

Their obsession with Descendents/All shows in all four five songs. The guitar sound, melodies, the basslines, the drum fills, even the way this is mixed sound very much like current Descendents. Compare the opening guitar chord for ‘Waiting' with “Nothing With You” from Descendents and you will get what I mean.

It's easy to call Lake Shark unoriginal but the fact is is that I really like this EP. When a band forms, they generally rip off other bands until they find their own sound. And Lake Shark can really write good songs and play their instruments well. I can only imagine what these guys can pull off on their next release. The last two songs on the EP, “Dead Flamingo” and “Safety” are good signs that the band is on the way to find their own sound.
