Review: On The Cinder – “Sedentary Escape”

Flower House Records – 08 Oct 2021

Great EP that promises a great future (for the band)

is a hardcore band from Buffalo New York. Their newest release, the EP Sedentary Escape, was recorded in response to the epidemic that led to the cancellation of the recording of their new full length record. The logic of this escapes me, but the good news is that there apparently will be a full length On The Cinder record in the near future. If this EP is any indication, it will be excellent.

Sedentary Escape starts off with the slow starting “It Begins.” Not the greatest opening track I have to say: it seems that On The Cinder has put too many ideas into one song, which in this case doesn't work out for the songwriting. Next up we have “Illusion of Progress” which is a far better represtation of the band. Fast melodic hardcore with a lot of tempo changes that sounds a lot like PEARS (which is good). In this song the band manages to again put many ideas into one song, but this time it does work. The same goes for the rest of the EP with “Bottomed Out” being another highlight of the record.

Since I have received this record I kept it in high rotation, and even given it multiple spins in a row. I already made the comparison with PEARS but I am going to do it again. PEARS first record Go To Prison wasn't the best sounding record of all time but made me an instant fan. Their follow-up Green Star is one of my favourite records of all time. I hope that Sedentary Escape is On The Cinder's Go To Prison so when their cancelled record finally comes out, it will blow me away.
